The only possibility for the very poor, who had no place to live, was the "workhouse", a sordid place where a little food was given in exchange for hard, hard work.

In the meantime the middle class demanded representation in Parlament and insisted on parlamentary reform.

Finally in 1832 the Reform Act gave the right to vote to all male householders and fairer representation to the new industrial towns.

The working classes were still left out of Parlament.

Workers organized themselves in trade unions, which, togheter with radical and socialist organizations, gave origin to a new political party: the Labour Party.

The Victorian Age also saw important social reform.

The slave trade, which had made the fortune of West Indian sugar and tobacco planters, was forbidden and slavery was abolished throughout the British dominions.

Factory acts were passed which put some limits on the use of children as workers.

By the middle of the century the economic and political power had passed into the hands of industrialists and traders.

Britain had become the "workshop of the world", and, under the policy of free trade, exchanged manufactured goods for foodstuffs and raw materials in every part of the world.

The Britain Empire, the largest empire in history, included Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Guinea, Borneo and Southern Africa, Nigeria plus other smaller African territories.

It covered more than a quarter of the world's land territory and had approximately 25 per cent of the world's population.

The climax was reached when Queen Victoria was made Empress of India: the hearts of most British people were filled with immense national pride.

THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

The main feature of the Industrial Revolution was the radical change in the way goods were made.

Up to the middle of the eighteenth century the machines used for making cotton and wollen cloth were very simple and were operated by hands, mostly by woman and children in their cottages.

Towards the end of the century new machinery was invented which could do the work of several people and mass production became possible.

Economic condition in the country were right. First of all there was extra capital ready to be invested;

La condizione economica delle campagne era giusta. Prima di tutto vi erano capitali extra pronti per essere investiti;

the land was rich in both iron and coal, the new source of energy, and there was a large labour force availble thanks to the increase in population.

Besides, Britain had become a great trading power and had plenty of outlet for its exports.

With the help of machinery and energy, new industries like iron, steel and engineering grew up.

Canals, and later machanical transport, made it possibile to carry large quantities of goods quickly and cheaply.

Market towns and country villages gave way to big industrial centres full of people and black chimneys.

Città di mercato e villaggi campagnoli diedero strada a grossi centri industriali pieni di gente e di ciminiere nere.

Her condition were extremely bad. Men, woman and children worked for long hours (usually from 5 am to 9 pm) for very low wages.

Factory towns were dirty placet with narrow streets and overcrowded houses. All these economic and social change broke up the order and two new classes, capital and labour came into being.

When the French Revolution broke out in France, the ruling classes were afraid that the "infection" might spread across the Channel. Luckily for them, the revolutionary ideas came from France, Britain's enemy.

So when British commercial interests were threatened, the country united its efforts and under the leadship of national heroes like Nelson and Wellington was finally able to defeat France.

THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION: HARD TIMES

Charles Dickens was born in 1812 and died in 1870.

Charles Dickens nacque nel 1812 e morì nel 1870.

He was probably the most important novelist of the Victorian Age, and even today he is still read by many people. Many of his novels, for exemple, Oliver Twist and Hard Times reflect the social problems of his time.

Hard Times (1854): in this book Dickens describes Coketown, an imaginary industrial town in the north of England.

The description of Coketown, and the lives of the people who work there, reveal Dickens's indignation at what he regarded as the ugliness, squalour and materialism of the new industrial age.

HARD TIMES

It was a town of red brick, or of brick that would have been red if the smoke and ashes had allowed it; but, as matters stood, it was a town of unnatural red and black, like the painted face of a savage.

It was a town of machinery and tall chimneys, out of which interminable serpents of smoke trailed themselves for ever and ever, and never got uncoiled.

It had a black canal in it, and a river that ran purple with ill-smelling dye, and vast piles of building full of windows where there was a rattling and a trembling all day long, and where the piston of the steam engine worked monotonouslu up and down, like the head of an elephant in a state of melancholy madness.

It contained several large streets all very like one another, and many small streets still more like one another, inhabited by people equally like one another, who all went in and out at the same hours, with the same sound upon the same pavements

To do the same work, and to whom every day was the same as yesterday and tomorrow, and every year the counterpart of the last and the next.

PRE-READING INFORMATION

During the reign of Queen Victoria (1837 - 1901) London was one of the world's richest cities. Foreign visitors marvelled at the number of shops, theatres, and fine streets. But there was another side.

It was the slums. All Britain's big industrial cities had them. All were terrible. Thousands of people were packed into tiny houses, with several families sharing a room. There were no drains, just the alleys between buildings.

Crime, disease, violence, were all part of the everyday life of the people living in such place. And it was the Industrial Revolution that was the cause.

When people started to work in factories it meant they had to live near their work place as there was no public transport. The factories devekloped very fast. Workers needed houses.

There was no time to plan and develop cities. The house that were built were badly construsted and there were never enough to go round. So the slums grew up.
