Beowulf - Lord Randal

۩ Beowulf


It is an epic poem and it is considered the first specimen of English literature. . It was written by an anonymous author.

The text of the poem has come down to us in a late 10 th-century. The poem however must have been composed in a late 8 th-century. The tone is epic and melancholy. The poem is about the deeds of Beowulf, nephew of the king of the geats.


☻The story




The story is setted in the 5 th century.

He is going to give help to his uncle, king of the geats, because his royal palace is haunted by 333j93d a terrible monster called Grendel .Beowulf wants to fight against Grendel. He succeeds in killing it and its mother. Some 50 years later, Beowulf loses his life, after killing a dragon.

It is a very realistic and detailed passage. There are a lot of epithet thanes, kennings, adjectives like strong, gallant and fearless. The Anglo-Saxon soldiers were brave, generous, courageous and loyal.  The betrayal was a serious fault.


☻Parafrasi


vv. 9 I suoi coraggiosi seguaci trovarono poco da ridire sulla sua audace avventura, anche se gli volevano bene.


Vv11 studiarono gli auspici e lo incitarono. Il che egli aveva raccolto intorno a sé era valoroso, 14 uomini risoluti, temprati e coraggiosi.


Vv 14 raggiungendo la riva dove la nave stava aspettando. Un marinaio esperto di mare che avvistava i punti di riferimento sulla costa. Venne l'ora si salire sulla nave, la nave navigava sulle onde del porto sotto la collina.


Vv 18 i marinai impazienti salirono sulla prua. I cavalieri si frangevano sulla riva.


Vv 20 nella stiva della nave in un posti sicuro stiparono le armature lucenti e l'equipaggiamento per la battaglia.


Vv 22 il vascello prese il largo, la nave ben rinforzata diretta verso il mare aperto in un allegro viaggio. Su ondate che si frangevano, con la vela che si gonfiava al vento con il rostro e la schiuma del mare, come un uccello in volo, la nave andava avanti veloce finché il sole del giorno seguente mostrò le scogliere splendere al sole, le colline forgianti e i promontori allungati nel mare. Il viaggio era finito e il vascello era attraccato.


Vv 30 e i geati con sferragliamento di armature e corazze di maglia. Ringraziano dio la cui grazia aveva concesso sentieri di mare (rotte sicure) per il loro viaggio sull'oceano.


۩ Lord Randal


This is one of the best known Scottish ballads. However  it isn't an original story. It can be read and sung because it's accompanied by music. It was written by an anonymous author.

This  ballad it's a dramatic story, there are tragic events and there are dialogs. There is no moral. The language is simple because it's a popular form of poetry. The repetition of the same lines become a refrain. It gives musicality to the ballad and it's useful to memorize the story.

☻The story

Lord Randal's mother wants to know where he has been. She suspects that something terrible has happened to him. She thinks he may have been poisoned. She suspects so because his haws and his hounds died after eating the remains of his meal. The murderer is his true-love. Lord randal is wealthy, he has lands, animals an estate. The mother concerns about the son's will.

۩ Figure retoriche


  • Epic is the earliest form of poetry in Britain. It's a long narrative poem divided in parts. It's about heroes.' Deeds and their great actions. It was usually sung by a scop in front of an audience.
  • Alliteration is the repetition of the same initial consonant in the same line.
  • Kenning metaphor like "swan-road" or "sea-paths".
  • Simile comparison between two terms, introduced by "like" or "as". Flying like a bird
  • Ballad it's a dramatic story. Its structure is regular. The theme can be love, death, deeds, treachery, war, will. the language is simple because it's a popular form of poetry.
