The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly

It is a story of an unfortunate female seagull Kengah who loses contact with the rest of her friends on her migration to the North Sea. Kengah is trapped by a sticky oil spill in the North Sea but painfully flies her way out, ending on a house terrace in Hamburg where Zorba the cat is resting. She finds herself lying on the terrace, covered in dirty oil until Zorba leans over her tryin 727b15h g to help her. Unfortunately the seagull dies. Just before dying she lays and egg and on her last breath she begs Zorba the cat to take care of the egg, to look after the chick and to teach him/her to fly. Zorba summons all the cats of the neighbourhood but it's too late. Chapter 8 sees four cats: Zorba, Colonnello, Diderot and Segretario watching the poor seagull dying. .Zorba finds himself committed to a serious engagement.

The cats have different opinions about what to do with the egg: Segretario and Diderot most cynically, suggest they make an omelette and they're ready to look up for a good recipe in Diderot's Encyclopaedia.

Colonnello is more loyal and would stick to the philanthropic promise Zorba made to the dying seagull: keep the egg , make it hatch and bring up the chick within the cats' community at the harbour.

Segretario, Diderot, Colonnello and Zorba mourn the dead seagull and bury her in the yard.

Part 2
Zorba the cat dutifully but embarrassingly starts brooding the egg in secret. He behaves like a first-time-mother and worries very much about whether he's being a good brooder or not.

He doesn't want his caretaker to know about his secret and makes his best to hide the egg every time the man comes to feed him and change his kitty litter.

The egg hatches and a small chick thinks Zorba is her mother. Zorba feeds her insects and cuddles her.

The cats gather at Harry's bazaar to design a protective background for Zorba's chick. (the chick is named Fortunata - Lucky - by the cats)

The cats behave very protectively and defend her from the mice's attacks.

The cats start thinking of teaching Fortunata to fly. Because Fortunata thinks she is a cat, she never mentions wanting to fly, but one day - on seeing some seagulls, she perceives the call of nature and starts fluttering around with no success. Invariably she ends up bumping on the ground.

The cats try to teach her how to fly by following the rules written in Diderot's encyclopaedia, but no way. 17 times Fortunata flutters only some centimetres high unsuccessfully.

The cats have one chance left: if they break the cats' big taboo, they can persuade some special human being to make Fortunata fly. The cats' ancient taboo was this : "thou shalt never speak to a human being". After a long meeting, the cats' assembly unanimously allows Zorba to speak in humanese to a very special man: a poet living nearby. Because poets are more sensitive than other men, they can be considered worth talking to.

Finally, on a windy rainy night, Zorba met the poet near a church. The poet lifted Fortunata gently in his arms and set her on a windowsill. Zorba told her Fortunata: "Now you'll fly, feel the rain, you like the rain" Fortunata spread her long wings and started fluttering, then she found herself high in the dark icy sky, while crying out "Zorba, I love you" " I can do it!".

The poet kept his eyes fixed on the free seagull, while stroking Zorba's head gently.

Zorba said : "Just on the edge of death she understood what's most important in life" - "What? " - asked the poet - " Only those who dare fly can fly" meowed Zorba. The poet tactfully left Zorba alone watching her Fortunata flying in the dark rainy sky of Hamburg. Zorba kept contemplating her until he felt painful tears of rain rolling down his eyelids. Eyelids covering big generous golden eyes.
